What does it take to enclose a patio in La Palma?

A patio enclosure in La Palma is a sunroom built over the patio slab you already have, turning an open patio into a closed room with screen, glass or insulated walls under a solid roof.

Most people who call us have a covered patio they don't use as much as they'd like, because of bugs, dust or a neighbor who can see right in. The price mostly turns on how much glass or insulated panel you pick, whether your cover can serve as a solid roof and whether the slab needs work before walls go on, and the schedule turns on that same roof and slab work plus the city's plan check and inspections, which we file and book for you. If keeping bugs out is all you're after, a lighter screen room may be enough. When I come out, I write up the room type, the options and the price for your job, so you have your own figure before anything starts.

How we build a patio enclosure

I start by looking at the cover and slab you already have, because the enclosure usually sits on that slab and ties into that cover. If the slab slopes too much, is cracked or has settled, we level or repair it first so the walls sit square and seal properly, and if it stops short of the cover's edge, we extend it. Then we work out the walls with you. One seller's guide says glass keeps the yard view and daylight while insulated panels hold temperature better and give more privacy, and that glass toward the garden with solid panels toward a neighbor or the afternoon sun is often the most cost-balanced layout. Once those choices are settled, our crew frames the room, sets the walls and roof panels, seals it up and cleans the patio before we leave.

Some patios don't fit a standard enclosure, or you want the room shaped around a particular use, and that's where our custom sunrooms come in. When there's no slab or cover worth keeping, the room starts from the ground instead, and that's full sunroom construction.

Building a patio enclosure in La Palma

In La Palma, the city's Building & Safety Division checks plans, issues permits and inspects the work, and almost every improvement plan has to clear plan check before a permit is issued. If your enclosure needs a permit, we take care of it, from drawing the plans and filing the three sets plan check starts with to booking the inspections. Inspections here run Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and the city is closed Fridays, so we plan the slab and wall work around those mornings. Some inspections need the owner there, and I'll let you know ahead of any visit where you need to be home.

We're based in La Palma and work in many of the cities around it, on both the Orange County and Los Angeles County sides. Most patios we see have a slab poured with the house and a cover added later, and we find the same mix of older slabs and add-on covers on jobs in Cypress and Buena Park.

Why call us for a patio enclosure

  • The owner measures and runs it

  • Started in La Palma in 2023

I learned this work on sunroom and patio cover crews, then started this business here in 2023. I'd rather slow down at the estimate and get the room right than rush you into one.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a patio enclosure cost in La Palma?

There's no single price, because it's set by the walls you pick, the shape your cover is in and what your slab needs. Screens make a lighter, simpler job than glass or insulated panels, while replacing an open cover or extending a slab adds work. I write up the price for your patio at the free estimate.

What is the best wall to use for a patio enclosure, screens or glass?

It depends on what you want to shut out, since one seller's guide says screens keep out bugs and debris and let breezes through, while glass and insulated walls block cold, heat, dust and rain better. Screens are usually the lighter, simpler project. If you go with glass and want help reflecting heat, Low-E glass is an option.

Can my lattice patio cover become the roof of an enclosure?

Only once it's replaced or topped with solid panels, because a lattice or open-slat cover can't keep weather out of a closed room. A solid aluminum cover in good shape is a much better starting point. The same seller's guide says an insulated roof panel upgrade can make the finished room far more comfortable.

Who issues building permits in La Palma?

The city's Building & Safety Division issues building permits in La Palma, after plan check. Some improvement plans may also need Fire or Health review and approval. If your enclosure needs a permit, we handle the filing.

When does a contractor need a state license in California?

The California Contractors State License Board requires a license when a project needs a building permit, uses added workers, or its contracts total $1,000 or more with labor and materials. That covers most patio enclosure jobs that build or alter a structure.

How do I take care of a patio enclosure once it's built?

One maker's care guide suggests inspecting the roof and gutters once a year. It also advises staying off the sunroom roof unless there's a need to be up there.

  • Custom sunrooms

For a patio with an odd shape or a room planned around one particular use.

  • Sunroom construction

For when the old slab or cover isn't worth building on and the room has to start fresh.
